Michigan Sheriffs Stand Against Legalized Recreational Marijuana

Michigan’s Sheriffs Say No to Legalizing Recreational Marijuana

Lansing, MI: 73 of Michigan’s County Sheriffs are making a public statement today in releasing their names to support Healthy and Productive Michigan’s efforts to defeat Proposal 18.1 which aims to legalize recreational marijuana.

They join the Michigan Sheriffs Association, Michigan Association of Chiefs of Police, Michigan Association of Treatment Court Professionals, and the Prosecuting Attorneys Association of Michigan in endorsing this campaign.

Scott Greenlee, President of Healthy and Productive Michigan said, “Michigan Sheriffs recognize the danger that legalized recreational marijuana means for our children and communities. We are grateful for their stand to oppose this dangerous proposal.”

Livingston County Sheriff Mike Murphy said, “Proposal 18.1 is dangerous for our youth and the general well being of Michigan. Colorado experienced a 151% increase in traffic fatalities after recreational marijuana was legalized.”

Berrien County Sheriff Paul Bailey said, “Recreational marijuana legalization has wreaked havoc on states that have legalized it. We have seen increased youth use, driving fatalities, and black market activity. Preserve the future of our great state and our youth, vote no.”

Ingham County Sheriff Scott Wriggelsworth said, “America is in the middle of a mental health crisis. Why anyone thinks now is a good time to legalize a mind altering drug is beyond me.”

In September, regional press conferences took place around the state where Prosecutors and Law Enforcement came together to make a public statement that Proposal 18.1 is bad for Michigan.

Greenlee concluded, “A huge problem with this proposal is unlimited potency – up to 99% THC. Our Sheriffs are particularly concerned that there is no reliable roadside testing for marijuana impairment available today. They know more drugged driving will mean more emergency room visits, and unfortunately more fatalities.”

Following is a current list of the Sheriffs who are standing with us.
